Guatemala Santa Barbara

Guatemala Santa Barbara

Regular price $18.00
This coffee was produced by small lot holders around the municipality of Santa Barbara in Huehuetenango. This is one of the highest, and driest, coffee regions in Guatemala. The high altitude, rugged terrain and scenic vista present a dramatic landscape on the slow, bumpy and typically dusty drive up to Santa Barbara. Along the way, we encounter small hamlets seemingly carved out of the surrounding mountainside, each with tiny coffee farms of a couple of hectares in area. The remote location pushes farmers to process their own coffee. Coffee cherries are often pulped, fermented and dried on patios on site and parchment sent to a larger mill for further processing.

We visited Santa Barbara on our way to Union Cantinil and La Libertad where we also source coffee. A portion of our payments for our purchases in Guatemala are directed to the CoffeeCare program  which aims to improve the quality of life of small coffee producers and coffee pickers.
